Congressman, Georgia's 5th District (D), US House of Representatives; Chairman 1963-1966, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
John Lewis has served since 1987 as the US Representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district, which includes much of Atlanta. A longtime civil rights leader, he organized sit-ins and participated in the first Freedom Rides as a college student. He was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington. He was a leader of the 1965 Selma-Montgomery march. Lewis recently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His books include Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement; Across that Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change; and a graphic novel memoir, March: Book One and March: Book Two.
